Why Handmade Clothing?

When my daughter was very little, we lived in different places for my husband’s work.  One of the places was a beautiful Caribbean island with very few options to buy children’s clothing. For her third birthday, she dreamed of a fancy Belle (Beauty and The Beast) yellow/gold ball gown to wear on a trip to Walt Disney World.  Getting this before the trip was impossible where we lived (and no mail service is available there).  There were no options left for me, but to learn to make it myself. This is where Rose & Lavender started. I had sewn for many years before this but the need for beautiful quality clothing made by hand, was done out of necessity to make my daughter’s dreams come true.  It has become a family tradition for me to make a new, more detailed Belle dress every year for her birthday.

Since then, I have learned so much and have studied with two different fashion schools and many international teachers to create the beautiful looks in my head for Rose & Lavender.  Handmade clothing is time consuming and at times hard to create, but the detail put into it is something that will never be matched in a factory.  I have studied the things that make beautiful children’s clothing (both historical and contemporary) and throughout time they don’t seem to change.  Quality fabrics, beautiful lines, and attention to detail have always been most important.

When you get items from Rose & Lavender, you know I have the same passion for each item that I did for that first Belle dress I made.  My daughter is a major influence on each item made and sold.  She helps decide the trims, fabrics, details, what is comfortable (and what isn’t!) on each collection we make.  The items you find on Rose & Lavender truly are one of a kind.  We hope you love them all as much as we do!
